They're off by maybe 10%, where battery claims may be off by 50%. The standard battery for my laptop is rated for 2.5 hrs. It lasted about 70 minutes when the battery was new and I was doing nothing but word processing.

As for EPA ratings, I have pretty conservative driving habits (brake and accelerate gradually, don't speed, shift early to avoid revving up to high RPMs, etc), and I almost always exceed the EPA rating for my vehicle. Now, it may be partly because I drive a 5-speed. Every automatic I have owned has performed at about 10% short of the EPA rating. Still, actual fuel economy depends a LOT on driving habits.

Has anyone ever actually bought a laptop where the battery length claims were anything close to what you actually got? I know I haven't. I tend to read online reviews from various testers to get a better sense of how long a battery can really last, but apparently some are so annoyed by the bogus claims from PC makers that they've filed a class action lawsuit. I'm all for things that would encourage computer makers to be more honest, though these sorts of class action lawsuits always seem a little silly. Are people really significantly "harmed" if the battery life doesn't live up to expectations? These cases usually seem more like opportunities for a few lawyers to get a bunch of money out of companies. The real issue should be that the FTC should have investigated the false claims from laptop makers.

"But what bothers me is that - to seem honest - they actually ship you this stuff configured the way they tested it, NOT the way most customers would prefer it. Have you ever bought a mobile phone, and while you're playing with your new phone, the screen goes dark every 10 seconds? First thing you have to configure is a reasonable backlight setting.

I dunno...the default settings aren't scaled back _enough_ for me. First thing I did was lower the screen brightness all the way (and wish it went lower) and change the energy saving setting from scaling both cores to 800MHz to scaling one core to 600MHz and shutting the other down entirely.

If you're the kind of person that wakes up half the passengers on a plane/train/bus with your ultra-bright laptop screen while playing WoW on your cell network card, then yea, you're gonna have poor battery life. Duh. But I've found that the manufacturers tend to do a pretty good job at estimating battery life with reasonable usage. People just aren't reasonable. They want it at full brightness even if they're in a pitch-black room.

Oh, and if you want power, don't buy a laptop! No matter what you get, it's primary purpose is to be _portable_, not _powerful_. I did not buy a powerful laptop because I always need that much power. It's nice sometimes, but usually I would be fine with this old 667MHz Celeron box I've got sitting here. Most of the time I'm not plugged in I'm either reading websites or writing websites. If it can run notepad and firefox, I'm good. I bought my laptop because it was portable. That's _the only_ reason I have a laptop.

There are certain things to note when you are using your notebook on batteries.

Especially when it comes to using notebook on batteries, I believe notebook users alike are having the same problem of fast battery consumption (myself included).

I've been tweaking around lately and I think I should write this post to share with those who might be having the same problem like me and most importantly how to overcome it.

There are 10 things to note for you to maximize your notebook battery usage.

1) Regular Defragmentation - Defragmentation is like arranging your files in order.

Example: When you go to a library, the book that you are searching for will be a bit faster if it is arranged from the A to Z alphabetical order and in their numbering code system. This way you will also save time and energy to search for the book.

The same principal also applies to the notebook. Regular the defragmentation process will result in less time and energy (battery usage) used by the notebook computer system. This will eventually lead to a longer battery life.

2) Lower Contrast - A dimmer screen means less battery usage used by the notebook LCD.

3) Use Programs Only When Necessary - We tend to use and open programs files which we sometimes may not need to access so frequently. Stop or exit running programs and applications like Messenger and Skype if you are not using them at that particular time. Well in the other hand I believe with added RAM, applications will run faster and the Virtual Memory is normally utilized by the CPU will take less battery power and will prevent you getting symptoms like “system hanging” which also simply input to both the user's frustration and battery usage in energy.

6) Run From Hard Disks - Try creating a virtual drive from programs such as Nero, PowerISO or Alcohol 120%. By running these programs on a virtual platform, we minimized the usage of optical drives like the CD or DVD drive which take a lot of battery energy.

7) Battery Maintenance - Keep battery contacts clean on interval. Clean the contacts with rubbing alcohol after 2 to 3 months of usage. This should refresh the batteries Li-Ion components from discharging effects. Keep them healthy by charging and discharging them to the fullest once in every 2 to 3 weeks.

8) Hibernation Mode - Hibernation mode is much more recommended than the Standby mode. Why? Hibernation will save your notebook settings from where you left off, and completely shut down the notebook thereafter. You can resume your work by just touching the “On/Off” power button.

9) Cooler Environment - We all know temperature is a major factor in PC computing especially when it comes to the notebook. With a cooler environment, cool air will make your notebook work more efficiently. That is why most internet cafes that are set up these days are air-conditioned.

10) Tweak Power Options - The Control Panel provides options for you to change the power settings. Via the Power Settings in the Control Panel, select the “Laptop battery mode” or “Low Power” to reduce energy usage.

If all of the above steps lead to a failure result, it's time for you to get a better notebook.

3. It is best to charge the battery only when it reaches less than 40% of battery power. Charging the battery when it is half full will make the battery weaker.

4. Some also recommend the following: only charge the battery when the laptop is turned off or on standby. When you are able to use the charger, then use the charger without the battery in the laptop. If you can't use the charger, then use the battery.

5. If not using the battery for a long time, then store it in a cool place, i.e., the refrigerator, using a ziplock bag.

I already have a power strip that will accept 3-prong electrical plugs. This is an absolute must as a 3-prong plug will not work in most Thailand electrical outlets.

Next thing I do is charge up my camcorder batteries. I like to take pictures of my entire holiday to include the departing airport, layover and arrival. I also ensure that I have my memory card and my spares. I also have an USB device for my memory card so that I can transfer pictures to my laptop computer. I check the memory card and delete or transfer any pictures on the card. I like to start my vacation with empty memory cards.

I have a tri-band, GSM cell phone that works in Thailand with a local SIM card. So, I make sure that the battery and back-up are both charged so that I can use my Thai cell phone as soon as I hit the ground in Bangkok.

Next, I check my portable DVD player. I make sure that I have my power cord and also my DIN jacks for the TV to DVD connection. I charge the battery and make sure that I have the small remote control and that the battery is operational.

Packing up all the charger cables and wires on the very top of my luggage makes for easy finding when I arrive.

I also have some minor electronics. I have sound reducing headphones that I pack in my carry-on. No real electronics, but I do make sure that I have 4 AAA batteries. That way I have 2 to use and 2 spares. My portable MP3 player gets charged via USB on my laptop and will last the entire 15 hours I am in the air.

Checking your electronic devices before you go, charging all of your batteries, and packing all the cables and wires, will make your vacation go electronically smooth.

Figure 1 shows the voltage and current signature as the lithium-ion cell passes through the charge stages.

Although the voltage peak is reached quicker with higher current, the topping charge will take longer.The charge time of most chargers is about 3 hours. Smaller batteries used for cell phones can be charged at 1C; the larger 18650 cell used for laptops should be charged at 0.8C or less. The charge efficiency is 99.9% and the battery remains cool during charge. Full charge is attained after the voltage threshold has been reached and the current has dropped to 3% of the rated current or has leveled off.

Increasing the charge current does not shorten the charge time by much. Although the voltage peak is reached quicker with higher charge current, the topping charge will take longer.

Some chargers claim to fast-charge a lithium-ion battery in one hour or less. Such a charger eliminates stage 2 and goes directly to ‘ready’ once the voltage threshold is reached at the end of stage 1. The charge level at this point is about 70%. The topping charge typically takes twice as long as the initial charge.

No trickle charge is applied because lithium-ion is unable to absorb overcharge. A continuous trickle charge above 4.05V/cell would causes plating of metallic lithium that could lead to instabilities and compromise safety. Instead, a brief topping charge is provided to compensate for the small self-discharge the battery and its protective circuit consume. Depending on the battery, a topping charge may be repeated once every 20 days. Typically, the charge kicks in when the open terminal voltage drops to 4.05V/cell and turns off at a high 4.20V/cell.

What happens if a battery is inadvertently overcharged? lithium-ion is designed to operate safely within their normal operating voltage but become unstable if charged to higher voltages. When charging above 4.30V, the cell causes plating of metallic lithium on the anode; the cathode material becomes an oxidizing agent, loses stability and releases oxygen. Overcharging causes the cell to heat up. If left unattended, the cell could vent with flame.

Much attention is focused to avoid over-charging and over-discharging. Commercial lithium ion packs contain a protection circuits that limit the charge voltage to 4.30V/cell, 0.10 volts higher than the voltage threshold of the charger. Temperature sensing disconnects the charge if the cell temperature approaches 90°C (194°F), and a mechanical pressure switch on many cells permanently interrupt the current path if a safe pressure threshold is exceeded. Exceptions are made on some spinel (manganese) packs containing one or two small cells.

Extreme low voltage must also be prevented. The safety circuit is designed to cut off the current path if the battery is inadvertently discharged below 2.50V/cell. At this voltage, most circuits render the battery unserviceable and a recharge on a regular charger is not possible.

There are several safeguards to prevent excessive discharge. The equipment protects the battery by cutting off when the cell reaches 2.7 to 3.0V/cell. Battery manufacturers ship the batteries with a 40% charge to allow some self-discharge during storage. Advanced batteries contain a wake-up feature in which the protection circuit only starts to draw current after the battery has been activated with a brief charge. This allows prolonged storage.

In spite of these preventive measures, over-discharge does occur. Advanced battery analyzers (Cadex C7000 series) feature a ‘boost’ function that provides a gentle charge current to activate the safety circuit and re-energize the cells if discharged too deeply. A full charge and analysis follows.

If the cells have dwelled at 1.5V/cell and lower for a few days, however, a recharge should be avoided. Copper shunts may have formed inside the cells, leading a partial or total electrical short. The cell becomes unstable. Charging such a battery would cause excessive heat and safety could not be assured.

Battery experts agree that charging lithium-ion batteries is simpler and more straightforward than the nickel-based cousins. Besides meeting the tight voltage tolerances, the charge circuit can be designed with fewer variables to consider. Full-charge detection by applying voltage limits and observing the current saturations on full charge is simpler than analyzing many complex signatures, which nickel-metal-hydride produces. Charge currents are less critical and can vary. A low current still permits proper full charge detection. The battery simply takes longer to charge. The absence of topping and trickle charge also help in simplifying the charger. Best of all, there is no memory but aging issues are the drawback.

The charge process of a lithium-ion-polymer is similar to lithium-ion. These batteries use a gelled electrolyte to improve conductivity. In most cases, lithium-ion and lithium-ion-polymer share the same charger.

Batteries are an essential part of most modern gadgets, and their role is expected to expand as they’re incorporated into vehicles and the electric grid itself. But batteries can’t move charge as quickly as some competing devices like supercapacitors, and their performance tends to degrade significantly with time. That has sent lots of materials science types into the lab, trying to find ways to push back these limits, sometimes with notable success. Over the weekend, there was another report on a technology that enables fast battery charging. The previous work was lithium-specific, and focused on one limit to a battery’s recharge rate: how quickly the lithium ions could move within the battery material. By providing greater access to the electrodes, the authors allowed more ions to quickly exchange charge, resulting in a battery with a prodigious charging rate. The researchers increased lithium’s transport within the battery by changing the structure of the battery’s primary material, LiFePO4.

The new work also gets fast charges, but by a rather different route. The authors, from the University of Illinois, don’t focus on the speed of the lithium ions in the battery; instead, they attempt to reduce the distance the ions have to travel before reaching an electrode. As they point out, the time involved in lithium diffusion increases with the square of the distance travelled, so cutting that down can have a very dramatic effect. To reduce this distance, they focus on creating a carefully structured cathode.

The process by which they do this is fairly simple, and lends itself to mass production. They started with a collection of spherical polystyrene pellets. By adjusting the size of these pellets (they used 1.8µm and 466nm pellets), they could adjust the spacing of the electrode features. Once the spheres were packed in place, a layer of opal (a form of silica) was formed on top of them, locking the pattern in place with a more robust material. After that, a layer of nickel was electrodeposited on the opal, which was then etched away. The porosity of the nickel layer was then increased using electropolishing.

When the process was done, the porosity—a measure of the empty space in the structure—was about 94 percent, just below the theoretical limit of 96 percent. The authors were left with a nickel wire mesh that was mostly empty space.

Into these voids went the battery material, either nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) or a lithium-treated manganese dioxide. The arrangement provides three major advantages, according to the authors: an electrolyte pore network that enables rapid ion transport, a short diffusion distance for the ions to meet the electrodes, and an electrode with high electron conductivity. All of these make for a battery that acts a lot like a supercapacitor when it comes to charge/discharge rates.

With the NiMH battery material, the electrodes could deliver 75 percent of the normal capacity of the battery in 2.7 seconds; it only took 20 seconds to recharge it to 90 percent of its capacity, and these values were stable for 100 charge/discharge cycles. The lithium material didn’t work quite as well, but was still impressive. At high rates of discharge, it could handle 75 percent of its normal capacity, and still stored a third of its regular capacity when discharged at over a thousand times the normal rate.

A full-scale lithium battery made with the electrode could be charged to 75 percent within a minute, and hit 90 percent within two minutes.

There are a few nice features of this work. As the authors noted, the electrodes are created using techniques that can scale to mass production, and the electrodes themselves could work with a variety of battery materials, such as the lithium and nickel used here. It may also be possible to merge them with the LiFePO4 used in the earlier work. A fully integrated system, with materials designed to work specifically with these electrodes, could increase their performance even further.
